Tata Steel Zoological Society values and recognizes the contribution of it’s Partners
Partnerships are essential in this 21st century for zoos involved in wild life conservation to run efficiently as they strive to achieve the ultimate goal of restoring and preserving biodiversity.
Our Partnership with Chester Zoo:
It is in this background that the Tata Zoo initiated a dialogue with Chester Zoo for forging a long-term conservation partnership. Prof. Gordon McGregor Reid, Director Emeritus, Chester Zoo, U.K visited Tata Steel Zoological Park during December 2010. Following topics were identified for collaboration and mutual help:
Healthcare of Zoo Animals
Our partnership with IUCN Galliformes Specialist Group (GSG)
The GSG is committed to the world wide conservation and sustainable management of all native populations of Galliformes species and their habitats. IUCN Galliformes Specialist Group (GSG) helps in the conservation of:
1. Red Jungle Fowl
2. Indian Peafowl
Tata Zoo is one among few zoos in India with a repository of pure bred Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) a tropical member of the family Phasianidae. This species is now threatened with hybridisation.
The Zoo has also done commendable work in breeding of the Indian National Bird- Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) and is trying to enrich its campus biodiversity through slow introduction.
Galliformes group is a guiding force for all of the above projects.
